In 2017, Fujiki made a brilliant debut at the Vienna State Opera, a veritable hall of fame for opera as Herold in Reimann’s “Medea”. This was a remarkable achievement as the first Asian countertenor to perform at this venerable institution, making major headlines. In 2012, he was selected as the Austrian representative for the 31st International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition for two consecutive years, becoming a finalist at the world competition and receiving the Hans Gabor Award. That same year, he won first prize at The Music Competition of Japan. In 2013, he made his European debut at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, selected for the role of Mannio in Gluck’s “Il Trionfo di Clelia”, earning high international acclaim. Domestically, his performances with major orchestras and recitals across the country are praised consistently, receiving constant offers from all over Japan.
In 2017, he released his debut album, “All That the Man Left Behind When He Died”. In 2018, he sang the theme song for the film “Hanalei Bay,” based on the novel by Haruki Murakami, and simultaneously released his major-label debut album, “Plaisir d’amour” (Warner Music Japan). In 2020, the new opera “The 400-Year-Old Castrato”, for which he served as the original concept creator and lead performer, enjoyed huge success at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. He starred as Oberon in Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the opening production of the New National Theatre, Tokyo’s 2020/21 season, followed by the appearance as the title role of Handel’s “Rinaldo” with the Bach Collegium Japan. His overwhelming presence as a leading character and his warm, expressive singing were praised in various press, establishing his popularity as an opera singer. In 2021, he released his third album, “Song of Life”. From 2022, he served as the very first producer in residence at the Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, where he planned and organized a series of orchestral and chamber music performances. He attracted attention for his leadership in successfully leading collaborative projects with theatres across Japan and creating new musical theatre productions in partnership with students.
In recent years, he has given recitals in two U.S. cities (2024), performed “St. Matthew Passion” with the Macau Orchestra, played the role of Bertarido in Handel’s “Rodelinda” at the Chofu International Music Festival 2025, a recital in Singapore (2025), and the role of Prinz Orlofsky in J. Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus” at the New National Theatre, Tokyo (2026). His performances have taken him around the world, and especially the role of Orlofsky is widely recognized as his signature role.
He is one of Japan’s internationally renowned artists, continuing his unique and unparalleled career, deserving the title “top runner” through his activities such as releasing the two CD-album set “A cappella” (TV Man Union), that features all-unaccompanied pieces, a feat unprecedented worldwide, as well as completing a five-city “A cappella Tour” and giving ceremonial performances at professional sports events.
